Entry and UCAT

Getting an interview at Edge Hill.

Typical requirements for school leavers. Always check the full requirements on the Edge Hill website.

Typical A-level offer

AAA (or A*A*B or A*AB with Biology and Chemistry at A or above)

Required subjects

Biology and Chemistry plus one other subject (not General Studies, Critical Reasoning or Citizenship).

How the UCAT is used

Applicants who meet the academic criteria are ranked by total UCAT score. The threshold is set each year according to the number of interviews (admissions policy, last reviewed 2022).

Situational judgement (SJT)

SJT Band 4 is automatically rejected (current course page).

Published UCAT scores

Edge Hill does not publish past cut-offs. Applicants who meet the academic criteria are ranked by total UCAT score, and the interview threshold is set each year from the number of interviews planned and that cycle's scores. The threshold is extended for eligible widening participation applicants, and SJT Band 4 leads to automatic rejection (admissions policy, last reviewed 2022).

GCSEs

Five GCSEs at 6/B including Biology, Chemistry (or Double Science 66), English Language and Maths.

Other qualifications

IB 36 with HL6 in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject, and SL5s. BTEC Extended Diploma is not accepted. Resits are accepted.

Contextual offers

The UCAT threshold is extended for applicants who meet widening participation criteria or complete Edge Hill's Widening Access to Medicine Programme. No reduced A100 offer is stated.

League tables weight different things, so the same school can sit in different places. Use them as one input, alongside the course, the selection method and where you would like to live.

Year by year

  1. Year 1The person and the community: life sciences, the seven core body systems, public health and social science.
  2. Year 2Where and how people receive care: more time in GP practices and hospitals, plus a community project.
  3. Year 3Care within multidisciplinary teams for specific patient groups, with consolidation weeks on campus.
  4. Year 4The patient journey across primary and secondary care specialties.
  5. Year 5Apprentice year: student assistantships, a specialist placement and acute medicine, preparing for the MLA.

How it is taught

Hybrid case-based and team-based learning in Years 1–2 within a spiral curriculum, alongside lectures, seminars, science practicals, clinical skills and simulation. Wednesday afternoons are usually kept free for sport and cultural activities.

Patient contact

Clinical placements from Year 1 in GP, hospital, community and mental health settings.

Intercalation

Optional. Students may intercalate for 12 months between Years 3 and 4 in an Edge Hill master's programme, such as an MRes or an MSc in public health nutrition, data science and AI, or mental health.

Placements

Hospitals, GP practices and community settings across the North West of England. Students pay their own travel.

Distinctive features

  • Year 5 apprentice year with student assistantships
  • Students allocated to specific hospitals for continuity
  • Consolidation weeks on campus between placements
  • UK-only eligibility

How you are assessed

Written exams and assignments, research projects, OSCEs, placement assessment and a portfolio, with the GMC Medical Licensing Assessment (AKT and CPSA) required to graduate.

Placements and travel

Placements are across the North West of England and students are allocated to specific hospitals. Students pay their own travel and parking; NHS Bursary rules allow placement travel claims from Year 5.

Accommodation

First-year full-time undergraduates are guaranteed a room in university halls, with all bills included; rooms were £93–£175 a week (2026/27).

Cars and parking

Parking on the Ormskirk campus is currently free for commuting students and staff, subject to eligibility criteria and registering your vehicle through the permit portal, and the University says it is not considering charging. Placements are spread across North West hospitals and students pay their own placement travel and parking, so a car helps in later years.

Food and essentials

A Morrisons convenience store with a post office sits at the centre of campus, Ormskirk town centre's supermarkets are a short walk away, and campus food outlets include Garden 41 (home-style food), Subways and EHU Market.

Going out

The Students' Union's Red Bar, at the heart of campus, has events most nights including a Monday quiz, karaoke and live sport; Ormskirk town centre has a cluster of pubs a short walk away, and Liverpool is reachable by train for bigger nights out.
