Choosing your four
How to build a strong shortlist.
You can apply to four medical schools. The strongest shortlists match how each school selects to where the applicant is strongest.
Start with your UCAT
Some schools rank on UCAT alone, some use a threshold, and others combine it with grades. Your score should shape where you apply.
Check the academic fit
Compare GCSE and A-level requirements. Some schools score GCSEs heavily at shortlisting; others look only at predicted grades.
Know the interview
MMIs, panels and group tasks need different preparation. Practise the format you will face.
Try a timed mock MMIWeigh the place and the cost
Halls and private rents vary from around £85 to £206 a week in halls, and £695 to £3,739 a month privately.
What it costs

Home tuition fees depend on where you live and where you study. Living costs vary far more than fees between schools.

Northern Ireland
£4,985For students from Northern Ireland studying there (2026/27). Students from Great Britain are charged at the university's own rate.
International
£45k–£60kTypical yearly fee; several schools charge a higher rate in the clinical years. Check each school's guide.
Questions
Common questions.
How many medical schools are there in the UK?
For 2027 entry, 39 UK medical schools run a five- or six-year medicine course that UK school leavers can apply to. Several more recruit only graduates or only international students, and 23 graduate-entry courses run across the UK.
Which medical schools use MMIs?
31 schools interview by multiple mini interview (MMI). Oxford, Cambridge, Glasgow, Barts and Southampton use panel interviews, and a few schools use their own formats. Filter by interview type above to see them.
Can graduates apply to study medicine?
Yes. Graduates can apply to the standard five- or six-year course at most schools, or to a four-year accelerated graduate-entry course. Graduate courses usually ask for at least a 2:1, and use either the UCAT or the GAMSAT.
Can international students study medicine in the UK?
Most UK medical schools accept a small number of international students, within limits set for each school. Fees for 2026/27 and 2027/28 are typically around £45,000 to £60,000 a year, and schools usually ask for IELTS Academic 7.0 to 7.5.
Do all UK medical schools use the UCAT?
For 2027 entry, every school listed for school leavers uses the UCAT, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and UCL, which previously used the BMAT. Some graduate-entry courses use the GAMSAT instead, and Buckingham uses its own assessment.
