Preparing for Kent and Medway

What matters most at Kent and Medway.

  1. 01

UCAT is a threshold, not a ranking: once you pass it, a higher score gives no further advantage.

  2. 02

Recent MMIs included a 40-minute group station, so practise working through a task with other applicants.

  3. 03

Some applicant groups also sit the CASPer test; check which group you are in.

Notes by Dr S Farooq, MBChB, BSc (Hons). Checked October 2026.

Format

MMI (2027 entry).

Stations and timing

Indicative format in recent cycles (undated): six 7-minute stations with 3-minute intervals, plus a 40-minute group station, held in person in Canterbury. International applicants have a remote circuit of three short stations and a group station. The 2027 format is not yet confirmed.

In person or online

For 2027 entry: in person at the University of Kent Canterbury campus (Home applicants); remote for international applicants (3 stations plus a group station).

Dates

For 2027 entry: shortlisted applicants book an MMI slot through KentVision; Home MMIs are held in December in Canterbury. KMMS pages differ on first offers: the 2027 entry requirements say January, the applying page says early March 2027. Offers go out in batches up to May 2027; extra MMIs may run in February or March.

Preparation advice from Kent and Medway

KMMS does not recommend any particular interview preparation and says commercial or school prep courses have sometimes disadvantaged applicants, because its MMI differs from most schools. A non-disclosure agreement covers MMI content.

Entry and UCAT

Getting an interview at Kent and Medway.

Typical requirements for school leavers. Always check the full requirements on the Kent and Medway website.

Typical A-level offer

AAA or AAB (set by the school's average attainment; Group A school leavers)

Required subjects

Chemistry and/or Biology (if neither, one of Physics, Maths, Psychology or Computer Science); three A-levels in the same sitting; practical endorsement; no Critical Thinking or General Studies

How the UCAT is used

For 2027 entry: a threshold screen (not a ranking): applicants above the threshold proceed to the contextualised, scored Stage 2b, and high scorers are not preferred over lower passing scorers. CASPer is also used for some groups (C, D and E).

Situational judgement (SJT)

2025-26 cycle thresholds: Group A school leavers needed SJT Band 3 or above (Band 4 is rejected); Groups B and D needed Band 2 or above.

Published UCAT scores

2025-26 cycle threshold (latest published): a UCAT total of 1,850 or above (47th centile), with SJT band 3 or above (band 2 for post-A level and graduate applicants). The previous cycle's threshold was 2,490 on the old four-subtest scale. Applicants with SJT band 4 are not considered.

GCSEs

Five GCSEs at 9-6 including English Language, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or Double Science plus one other).

Other qualifications

IB 34 with HL Chemistry and/or Biology, and 6 in HL sciences. BTEC, T Level and IBCP are not accepted. Predicted grades are not used.

Contextual offers

'Contextualise Everyone': all school leavers' grades are compared with their school's average. There are no postcode- or free-school-meal-based reduced offers; special consideration is given to the Kent and Medway Progression Federation and partner schools.

Clinical placements from the first term of Year 1 (early November), mainly in primary care in Years 1-2.

Intercalation

Optional intercalation after Year 3 or Year 4, including intercalated master's programmes such as the KMMS MSc in Clinical Education.

Placements

Primary care placements from the first term (nearly 100 partner GP surgeries). From Year 3, placements in the four acute trusts (Dartford and Gravesham, East Kent Hospitals, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, Medway) and the Kent and Medway mental health trust; students live for most of the year in their trust area in Years 3–5.

Distinctive features

  • Joint degree from two universities (Kent and CCCU); Kent joined a combined group with the University of Greenwich from 1 August 2026, which KMMS says does not change teaching or assessment
  • Dissection, prosection and radiology in the anatomy learning centre
  • Kent's first GP simulation suite
  • Graduation at Canterbury Cathedral

How you are assessed

Written knowledge tests (AKTs, sat online), an OSCE at the end of every year, coursework essays, an e-portfolio and case-based discussions on placement. Finals include the national MLA AKT, the MLA CPSA and the Prescribing Safety Assessment.

Main teaching hospitals

  • Darent Valley Hospital (Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust)
  • East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust sites
  • Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust sites
  • Medway Maritime Hospital (Medway NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (mental health)

Placements and travel

Years 1–2 are taught on both Canterbury campuses, about 15 minutes apart by bus, with GP placements elsewhere in Kent and Medway. In Years 3–5 students live for most of the year near their placement trust, and placement accommodation is available.

Student life

Living in Canterbury as a medic.

Where you will live, the societies and sport on offer, and how you will get around. Prices and dates change, so check the linked pages.

The city

Canterbury is a small cathedral city with around 40,000 students. Christ Church is in the city centre; the University of Kent campus sits on a hill above the city in parkland.

Accommodation

First-year rooms are guaranteed if you apply by the deadline (31 July 2026 for 2026 entry) using the KMMS-specific form, which places medics together on a longer contract. You can choose University of Kent or Christ Church halls.

Medic societies and clubs

  • Specialty sub-societies within MedSoc
  • MedSoc sports events and Winter, Halfway and Graduation balls

Sport and gyms

Kent Sport runs the Sports Centre and Pavilion on the Canterbury campus; student annual memberships cost £170 (Plus) or £220 (Premium Plus) for 2026/27, with a free pay-to-play option.

Shops and essentials

KMMS students can use both university libraries, which have extended opening hours, and the Kent campus has its own restaurants and shops.

Getting around

High-speed trains reach London in about an hour, and buses link the two Canterbury campuses in about 15 minutes. The Kent coast and ferries or trains to mainland Europe are close by.

Support for medics

Each student has a Personal Academic Tutor from Week 1, replaced by a Clinical Academic Tutor (usually a senior local clinician) from Year 3. First years can opt into peer mentoring with a second-year student, and the KMMS Student Life and Guidance team offers practical and pastoral help.

Cars and parking

Students living in University of Kent campus accommodation, or anywhere inside the Canterbury exclusion zone, cannot get a student parking permit (appeals are possible for health or caring reasons), and the KMMS halls page states there is no student car parking. KMMS reimburses placement travel by public transport or HMRC mileage if you drive, but parking costs at placements are not reimbursed.

Food and essentials

There are two Co-op shops on the Canterbury campus (Central Campus and Parkwood), and Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Asda, M&S and Waitrose are in or around the city, a short bus ride away.

Going out

Campus has The Venue nightclub (Wednesday VENSDAY student night) plus Mungo's, K-Bar and Woody's in Parkwood; off campus, nights out centre on Canterbury city centre.
